The double helical structure of a DNA carries genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism. The DNA literally defines the way we lead our lives. Who we are? What we do? How we live? If we uncoil the DNA in one of our cells, it will be approximately 6 feet long. And if we keep connecting the DNAs of all our cells, the total length will be close to 67 billion miles.

Let’s extend this to an organization! The DNA of the organization reflects in the way it works and deliver results. It is made of “seen” and “hidden” traits or behaviors that make up the “personality” of the organization. The organizational DNA is at work when we see some organizations continuously delivering results, while some disappoint. Without a shred of doubt, organizational DNA is a huge factor that either promotes or impedes the growth of the organization. The potentiality for success of an organization lies in its DNA! The Org DNA, short for Organizational DNA, a concept developed by Strategy&, part of the PwC network will be a good place to know if your organization has the right DNA to be successful!

राज्ञे धर्मणि धर्मिष्ठा: पापे पापा: समे समा:।

राजानमनुवर्तन्ते यथा राजा तथा प्रजा: ।।

Raagye Dharmani Dharmishthaah Paape Paapaah Same Samaah |

Chankaya’s Arthashastra, the ancient Indian treatise on statecraft, political science, economic policy and military strategy brings out the relationship between the King’s behavior and that of his subjects. Subjects follow their king, it says. They are righteous if the king be one; sinners if the king be a sinner. As the king so are the subjects, wrote Chanakya in Verse 267 of Arthashastra. The organization’s DNA (and its culture) is thus impacted by the DNA of its leaders. Obviously because, the leaders are the ones who decide the everyday working and drive the organization forward. What they want, happens! What they think and do, matter! It is very important to hence understand, the traits that we would like to see in an “ideal leader”.

Leaders “shape behaviors” — both of self and employees

Leaders usher “healthy change” that drive organizations

Leaders “carry and disperse enthusiasm and unwavering commitment” amongst employees

Leaders “use data” to think, solve problems and make critical decisions

Leaders infuse an ever-growing “appetite” in employees to perform at their best

Organizations today face lot of challenges internally and externally. In order to wade through these challenges, we need skill sets in leaders that are entwined in their DNAs. This in turn, will decide if they organization flourishes or not.
