Sales is a tough, highly demanding profession. You need to be on the toes at all times. And again you will have your fair share of rejections and disappointments. However, it is proven beyond doubt that a “happy sales rep” (and as a consequence the line manager!) is more productive and consistent in performance. Are there qualities that can fetch you happiness in sales? Yes, there are! Most definitely, in order to be happy the rep has to be on target and he has to earn incentive.

Be enthusiastic: There is no other more important driving force in sales as enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the energy that will make people — customers, your managers and the company notice you. Enthusiasm will make you find new ways to add value to your customer visits. What more can I do to my customer? How can I make my customer more excited to meet me? Is there any way by which I can do things differently?

Just like fuel that helps the vehicle to move forward, enthusiasm helps you to advance relationships and outcomes. Show your customers that you are eager to have their business. Whenever you meet them, do so with great purpose and attach importance every time you meet them.

Be thirsty: Find newer ways to increase business. Find ways to make customers increase business. And do this, not out of pressure but by choice and pleasure. What should I do to increase numbers? What can I do more? How can I win a disgruntled customer or account?

Be attentive: You will see and hear a thousand things inside and outside the clinics. You will be constantly bombarded with information. If you inculcate the habit of paying attention to things (big and small), you will be able to use them effectively. Did I miss anything? Why is this here? What are my competitors trying to do?

Be thorough: Knowing your customer and the product you are selling help you gain respect from your customers, your peers in the company and your managers. Do I know enough? How do I learn?

Be adaptable: Be prepared to change and adapt yourself as per the needs of the market. I will change as per the requirements? I don’t choose. As a soldier, I stand up and fight.

Be trust-worthy: If you want to go a very long way, you need to be truthful and be trust-worthy. Your manager, your customer and the company you work for should know that you are trust-worthy and can be relied upon.

Be energetic: Numbers can go up and down. It is very important that you do not lose energy levels at any time. There will be times when the burden of sales quotas pin you down. Everything that happens, keep focus! Do not go into idleness and inaction. On the contrary, increase your efforts.

Happiness in sales is achievable, very much. And you will discover yourself when you love your job.
